x1 Practical Assessment

This chassis systems & wheel alignment course will give you a repeatable process for chassis systems and wheel alignment work, from the customer complaint through to the final check.

You will learn every geometry angle, what it does, what it affects and the order you adjust them in.

You will learn the pre-checks that have to be done before you touch an adjuster because most wheel alignment complaints are not wheel alignment faults. They are worn bushes, broken springs, wrong tyre pressures or a rig that was never levelled.

You will learn to read tyre wear patterns and work back to the cause.

This course will help you stop cars coming back for the same complaint, cut the time you lose on the rig and stop your workshop paying for parts that were never the problem.

You will spend a good part of the two days in the workshop on our Supalign equipment, measuring and adjusting front and rear axles on real vehicles.

You will also cover the active and adaptive suspension systems fitted to modern cars, because a car on air springs or adaptive dampers has to be set up differently.

What you'll walk away with

  • Correct chassis geometry diagnosis and adjustment, each time, every time
  • Camber, caster, toe, steering axis inclination, included angle, thrust angle, geometric centreline, Ackermann and toe out on turns, scrub radius, slip angle and setback
  • The right order of adjustment, and why you always start at the rear
  • The preconditions that have to be met before a measurement means anything
  • How to get a usable description of the complaint out of your customer
  • A road test that gives you something to work with
  • Tyre wear patterns and what they tell you
  • Laser, CCD and 3D alignment equipment, and what each one is good at
  • Hands-on measurement and adjustment, front and rear, on our Supalign equipment
  • Adaptive damping, VW DCC, Volvo 4C and Audi Magnetic Ride
  • Air suspension, active anti-roll bars and interlinked anti-roll systems
  • Understeer, oversteer, and how your geometry settings change the way a car behaves
